This topic is focused on solutions to win the war on drugs. This so-called war on drugs, to date, has been a complete and dismal failure

Portugal decriminalized drugs 14 years ago - and now hardly anyone dies from an overdose

"In 2001, the government of Portugal made a bold move and decriminalized every kind of street drug, from cannabis to cocaine, to heroin and anything in between. For over a decade now, the country has been treating drug possession and abuse as a public health issue, not a reason to just lock people up. Now, in Portugal there are no criminal records haunting drug users. There are more opportunities to get help, if people need it. Now, anyone who gets caught possessing street drugs must pay a small fine, but more importantly they are referred to a treatment program."

"Today there are only 3 drug overdose deaths per one million Portuguese citizens."

However... in the USA...

"During 2014, a total of 47,055 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States, representing a 1-year increase of 6.5 per cent, from 13.8 per 100,000 persons in 2013 to 14.7 per 100,000 persons in 2014." (Source CDC)

14.7 x 10 = 147 drug overdose deaths per million people in the US.

147 vs 3.

Not to mention our for-profit prison system which makes a sh*t ton of money when non-violent drug users get thrown in jail... repeatedly... and also destroys millions of families.
